It came to my attention through the eyes of a wonderful 20 year old woman, who I have known since she was four, that she thought puppies were all born at once, not so!! In a big litter puppies birthing can take up to 24 hours. In this litter it was 8 hours, however, Violet retained a puppy that was born 22 hours after the birth of the first puppy. She was stillborn. Violet developed a serious uterine infection because of this, spiked a fever of 105. Violet is doing great now. She is on massisve doses of antibiotics for ten days. The puppies are being bottled fed twice a day to put probiotics in their systems to counter the effects of the antiobiotics in their mother's milk on their systems.
The first puppy was born at 7:30 AM on 9/12/09:
Ms Pink @ 7:30 AM
Mr. Red @ 8:36 AM
Ms. Violet @ 9:04 AM
Ms Cornflower @ 9:50 AM
Mr. Green @ 10:35 AM
Mr. Orange @ 12:05 PM
Mr. Blue @ 12:25 PM
Mr. Purple @ 3:34 PM
A little stillborn girl was born 9/13/09 @ 5:30 AM.
Birthing puppies is a natural event and can be with great sorrow and stress.
